It became a little easier the farther up they went, felt less like she was damning Roland to something he couldn't help regretting when she caught Lena's green eyes. Besides, for as much as Nariko might easily blame herself for all of this she had been sincere the other night. Roland didn't have to show up, he had told himself that there was no benefit to their marriage so he was just as free to rid himself of it as Nariko had been. It wasn't the best reasoning, not the least bit sound, but it would be enough to get her through these formalities and into the aftermath.
By the time anyone was asking a question she had relaxed her grip on Ignis' arm, and he deserved more than just polite thanks for putting up with her nerves, well hidden as they were. No, instead her cousin, who might as well have been the only elder brother she could possibly have, spoke very clearly, as if he was entirely used to this ceremony, and hadn't only learned it the night before to the best of his abilities. "On behalf of our kin, and of Vincent Lunae, I do."
That smile broke into a temporary shock. She could kick him in the shins for that, but considering how it relaxed the tension she hadn't even noticed, and how it let her split into a real and true grin, one that fit her leagues better, to do so would be cruel. She squeezed his arm gratefully but kept herself composed all the same. This wasn't the time for dramatics.
I thought so too, and no problem!
